Aburaya Japanese Fried Chicken
Aburaya was founded in Oakland, California by chef Adachi Hiroyuki, whose background spans both traditional Japanese kitchens and the Bay Area punk scene. Inspired by the energy of Japanese izakayas, he set out to create a restaurant that combined authentic karaage-style fried chicken with the things he loved most: great food, affordability, and punk rock.

As fellow bass players and longtime friends, our collaboration began with a simple sketch. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Ramones crest, Adachi envisioned a mark that reflected both his Japanese roots and the irreverent spirit of the restaurant. That initial idea became the foundation for a brand that felt as distinctive as the food itself.

Over more than a decade, the identity has continued to evolve alongside the restaurant, embracing playful references to punk, beer, and pop culture while remaining unmistakably Aburaya. It remains a reflection of the idea that started it all: authentic Japanese fried chicken served with the energy and spirit of a punk show.
